Absolution got considerably more. I have played a little World of Assassination too, but the older games mostly sit there. Having a series in my collection does not mean it has become part of my life in the same way as the games I actually keep going back to.

That makes this old Computer for Alle article from 2002 interesting. The magazine was excited about Hitman 2: Silent Assassin: the graphics, the music, the disguises and how much IO Interactive had improved on the first game. I can see why it impressed people. I can also see the things in that design that keep Hitman at a distance for me.

I have been playing games since the late 1980s, and I am mostly a single-player gamer. I like getting into a game, understanding what it wants from me and spending time in its world. Hitman often asks for a different kind of commitment: study the place, learn the routines, make a plan and then repeat the job until it looks professional. That can be clever as hell. It still has to make me want to do it.

“Den danske lejemorder” — 349 kroner in 2002

Computer for Alle called its article “Den danske lejemorder”, the Danish hitman. It is a good headline because there is nothing to dress up. A Copenhagen studio had made a game about a bald contract killer, and now it was back with a sequel that people were taking seriously.

IO Interactive released Hitman: Codename 47 in 2000. Silent Assassin followed in 2002, published by Eidos. This is the old Hitman 2 with Silent Assassin in the title, years before the modern trilogy. The black suit, white shirt, red tie and barcode were already there. You could recognise 47 without needing the name on the box.

The Danish article listed a price of 349 DKK. I like details like that in old magazines. They put the game back on a shop shelf instead of leaving it floating around as another cheap title in a digital sale. At that price, the magazine’s praise and complaints were part of deciding what to spend your money on.

Retirement lasted about as long as you would expect

47 has withdrawn to a Sicilian sanctuary and is working as a gardener. He is trying to get away from killing, with Father Vittorio offering him something other than another contract. Then Vittorio is kidnapped, and 47 goes back to the International Contract Agency for help. Information comes at a price, so the assassin returns to work.

The garden is a good place to begin. It gives the killing some weight because there is a quieter life sitting right there beside it. A church, a priest and a man who might finally do something useful with his hands. Then he is sent around the world to kill people again. There is enough in that setup for a much more personal story than a list of targets.

47 in the garden at Gontranno. Moving from country to country keeps the scenery changing, but the kidnapping needs to remain something I care about. Otherwise the game has a strong opening and a travel schedule where the middle should be.

Even the original manual has the line “Trust in your god, but carry a loaded gun.” That is a good bit of Hitman writing: cold, ridiculous and completely straight-faced. The faith and the gun are sitting next to each other without 47 appearing especially troubled by the arrangement. I would rather have more of that character conflict than another vague criminal conspiracy.

The villa explains the appeal better than the plot does

The early Sicilian villa mission, Anathema, makes the basic idea easy to understand. There is a guarded house, a target inside and several possible ways to get near him. A postman’s uniform or a delivery worker’s clothing changes what the guards expect to see. Getting dressed becomes part of getting the job done.

The interesting choice is what happens after I pick an approach. Where can that disguise take me? What can I carry? Which door makes sense? A gun might solve one problem and create three more. That is the sort of detail that makes Hitman more interesting than a shooter with a crouch button.

The Sicilian villa in Anathema. A guarded house and a clear target are enough to give the player several problems to solve. Screenshot by MAT via MobyGames; IO Interactive / Eidos

It also shows why giving a player a place to explore can work better than constantly feeding them instructions. I can look at that villa and understand the broad problem immediately. The route is mine to work out. I do not need a map the size of a small country for a mission to have depth.

That is where the series has its strongest argument with me. A manageable location with several meaningful approaches sounds good. A huge location where I spend ages deciding which of its many little systems to engage with can lose me before the assassination even starts. More possibilities do not automatically give me more reason to play.

A disguise needs rules I can actually understand

Stealing clothing is a great mechanic. Walking past a guard dressed as somebody who belongs there creates a different kind of tension from hiding behind a crate. The guard is looking at me. I am relying on what he thinks he sees. That is much more interesting than making every enemy completely blind until a little detection bar fills up.

But the suspicion system has to explain itself through the way people react. If I bring a weapon somewhere it should not be, push into a restricted room or get too close to a guard, I can understand the danger. I need to learn a rule from the mistake. Otherwise the next attempt is just me hoping the game is in a better mood.

A soldier disguise in St. Petersburg. Looking as if you belong is only useful if the suspicion rules make sense. Screenshot by MAT via MobyGames; IO Interactive / Eidos

In his 2021 PC Gamer replay, Phil Savage described inconsistent guard reactions and a disguise system that could be difficult to read. That is a serious criticism of a game built around planning. If the same-looking approach produces different reactions without a clear reason, the player starts planning around the software instead of the situation.

I do not think being old excuses that. I grew up with games that explained very little, and I have spent enough time being stuck in them. Some made figuring things out enjoyable. Others were simply a pain in the arse. Keeping the player confused is not proof that a game respects their intelligence.

Slow movement can make a careful game a tedious one

Watching a patrol can be tense when there is a real decision coming. Waiting for the same patrol again after a failed attempt can be bloody boring. Hitman depends on that distinction. The time spent preparing needs to feel useful, because there is quite a lot of preparation between the moments people put in a highlight video.

GameSpot criticised how slowly 47 moves while sneaking. That matters when the point is to get behind somebody quietly. An assassin should require patience, but the controls should still let the plan happen. If I have worked out the opportunity and the movement makes it awkward to reach, I am fighting the pace of the character as well as the guards.

The save limits add another layer. GameSpot documented seven in-mission saves on Normal, two on Expert and none on Professional. I understand why removing saves can make a clean run more demanding. It also makes every unclear reaction more expensive. A mistake that costs seconds is irritating. A mistake that sends me back through a long stretch of walking is a reason to turn the game off.

For me, difficulty earns its place when it makes me improve. Learning a route, timing a shot and getting away cleanly all fit that. Repeating an uneventful approach because the last attempt fell apart in a way I did not understand adds time without necessarily adding anything worthwhile.

The Russian sniper job is a better kind of pressure

The St. Petersburg mission gives the sniper rifle a proper problem to solve. There are several people in the room, and picking the right person matters. Looking through the scope is only part of the job. The briefing and the information coming over the radio have a purpose because the game expects the player to identify the target.

The St. Petersburg sniper job, with Diana warning 47 to identify the target before firing. That line tells me more about the attraction of Hitman than a promise of hundreds of ways to kill somebody. The tension comes from knowing that one shot can be enough, and that it has to be the correct shot.

I find that easier to get interested in than wandering through an enormous map trying to decide what kind of entertainment to make for myself. Give me a clear job with enough room to think and I have something to work towards. The series does not need endless freedom in every mission to make the assassin idea work.

Japan shows the cost of stretching the idea

The snowy Japanese locations look good in screenshots, and the chance to dress 47 as a ninja is exactly the sort of daft detail I expect from Hitman. But a different costume and a different landscape do not guarantee a better mission.

Savage’s retrospective singled out the two mountain approaches to the Japanese castle for frustrating sniper detection, including trouble while disguised. That is the sort of design that would put me off. A journey to the interesting location needs interesting decisions of its own. Being sent through a long approach while trying to guess what will get me shot sounds like a chore.

The Japanese snow levels. Stealth loses a lot of its appeal when the main activity becomes carefully covering ground.

Hitman is funny because 47 takes this rubbish seriously

The humour does not need 47 to keep making jokes. A professional killer becoming a gardener is already a strange sight. So is the same bald man putting on somebody else’s clothes and trusting that the outfit has done enough of the explaining.

There is something wonderfully stupid about a world where a stolen uniform can get the man doing the stealing straight into the place he wants to murder somebody. It makes sense as a game mechanic. It is still funny when I step back and think about it. Everybody apparently buys clothing in Agent 47’s size.

47 in a postman's uniform with a shotgun. That delivery has gone badly wrong. Nobody needs to write a punchline when the character looks like he should be carrying a parcel and is busy turning the courtyard into a shooting gallery.

47’s seriousness holds it together. He is not trying to get the audience to laugh. The situation does that for him. I like that dry side of Hitman much more than games that constantly nudge me to notice how funny they think they are. The absurdity is there, and the assassin carries on with his job.

Finishing the job and doing it well are different things

The end-of-mission rating is where Silent Assassin gives the violence a cost beyond simply surviving it. The game keeps track of the mess: shots, kills, encounters and the balance between stealth and aggression. I can get the target and still have performed like a complete idiot.

There is a good joke in being a supposedly elite contract killer and getting “Mass Murderer” as the result. The name of the game promises professionalism. The results screen can point out that the player delivered something else entirely. Jeremy Kauffman’s 2002 GamesFirst review described a plan collapsing into a disastrous body count and how that rating made the outcome feel like his responsibility.

The mission results screen with the Silent Assassin rating. It gives the player a reason to replay a mission without needing a bigger gun or a new piece of scenery. The target is dead in both versions of the job, but the path to that result matters.

It is also where my taste starts pulling away from the series again. I can appreciate a good run without wanting to repeat the mission until every number looks right. When I have got through a campaign, I often want another game, another story or another world. Hitman gets a lot of its life from people who enjoy making the same job cleaner, stranger or more difficult. That has never been the main attraction for me.

The atmosphere still deserves the praise

Computer for Alle was enthusiastic about the graphics, cutscenes and cold atmosphere. Looking at these old screenshots, I can see a game with an identity. The Sicilian stonework, the grey streets of St. Petersburg, the snow and the modern interiors give the contracts different surroundings instead of making the whole campaign feel like one enormous warehouse.

I am not going to judge a 2002 game as if it was supposed to have been made last week. Its rooms can look bare, and the faces and animation show their age. What matters to me is whether I can still recognise a place and understand the mood. Silent Assassin has more going for it there than a simple count of polygons would suggest.

The basement in Malaysia. His official soundtrack page credits 110 musicians from the Budapest Symphony Orchestra and Choir. That is a serious production for a game about a man quietly getting into places to kill people. Track names such as 47 Makes a Decision and Japanese Snow Castle also keep the music tied to the character and locations.

The orchestra and choir fit the religious opening and the sense of a man carrying his past around with him. They give the premise a scale that a string of criminal briefings cannot manage alone. I can respect that atmosphere while still thinking the disguise rules and stretches of waiting deserve a harder look. Good music does not make an irritating system less irritating.

It was a success with reviewers in 2002

The praise was not something invented later by people remembering their childhood. Silent Assassin was well received at release. The Danish article treated it as a considerable improvement on Codename 47, and the international reviews show the same broad enthusiasm.

Source

Edition / date

Result

Computer for Alle

Danish article, 2002

Positive on presentation and improvements; criticised length and no multiplayer

GameSpot — Greg Kasavin

PC / PS2 / Xbox review, 8 October 2002

8.6/10

GamesFirst — Jeremy Kauffman

PlayStation 2, 28 November 2002

4/5

Metacritic archive

PC critic aggregate

87/100 from 20 reviews

GameSpot praised the sequel’s improvements and presentation while still finding weaknesses in the story and stealth pacing. Kauffman went much further in his enthusiasm, seeing something artistically interesting in the player’s responsibility for the violence. He also mentioned cumbersome menus, confusing maps and performance glitches.

His review treated some of the frustration as part of the artistic experience. I do not automatically buy that argument. A game can be disturbing, bleak or demanding without making basic interaction a struggle. I would rather it make me uncomfortable through what I have chosen to do than make me annoyed because selecting the thing I need is awkward.

Reading those reviews helps explain the game’s reputation, but the high scores do not settle whether I would enjoy spending my own time in it. They show that the concept worked for those reviewers. They also show that several of the rough edges were visible right from the start.

No multiplayer is a bloody strange complaint to me

Computer for Alle’s two main complaints were the campaign length and the lack of multiplayer. It estimated that an experienced player could finish in about 10–15 hours. That is the magazine’s estimate, not time I have put into a completed Silent Assassin campaign.

A campaign of that length does not bother me by itself. Ten good hours can leave a much stronger memory than thirty hours padded with work I stopped caring about halfway through. For an assassination game, I would judge how much the missions offer and whether I want to return to them before treating the number of hours as the problem.

The multiplayer complaint loses me completely. I am not a multiplayer gamer. I hate competitive multiplayer, and it has never been what I look for in Hitman. I want the campaign to give me a reason to care about what I am doing. Putting another player in the way would not solve the things that keep the series from clicking with me.

PC multiplayer was a big part of gaming in that period, so I understand why a magazine listed it. I still do not agree that every game needed it. Silent Assassin already had an idea built around one player watching, planning and controlling the pace. That is a proper game to sell on its own.

Why Absolution held my attention more

Absolution is the Hitman game I spent more time with, alongside some Blood Money. Its more directed, cinematic approach was easier for me to get into. IO’s own description of Absolution called it a more personal journey for 47 and a different experience from the earlier games. That difference matters to me.

I am not saying every part of Absolution worked. I am saying it gave me more of a reason to keep moving through the campaign. A clearer direction can hold my interest better than a large location full of optional ways to arrange an assassination. That is probably why a game some traditional Hitman fans object to received more of my time.

World of Assassination pushes the sandbox much further. I have played a little of it, and the amount of choice can become too much for me. There are approaches, routes, opportunities and challenges everywhere. I start feeling as if I should spend hours learning a location before I have even decided whether I want to be there that long.

I can admire how much thought went into those places. I can watch a clever assassination and understand why somebody loves the game. Sitting down with it myself is a different matter. Sometimes I want a campaign to take me somewhere instead of asking me to invent the next several hours of entertainment from a long menu of possibilities.

Silent Assassin is smaller than the modern games, but it still belongs to that idea of learning the job and returning to improve it. Looking back at it helps me understand the appeal without making me pretend the appeal has suddenly become mine.

A Danish achievement that I can respect without loving it

Silent Assassin helped turn IO Interactive’s first Hitman idea into a series with a future. Contracts followed in 2004, Blood Money in 2006 and Absolution in 2012. The later games kept changing the formula, but the core image survived: 47, a target and the question of how to get close enough.

As somebody who has been gaming since the 1980s, I like seeing a Danish studio make something that travelled that far. An old Computer for Alle article catches an earlier point in that history, before the franchise had accumulated years of reputation and before 47 had seven places waiting for him in my Steam library.

But Hitman still has not properly clicked with me. I like the dry humour, the atmosphere and the idea of a carefully planned assassination. I am much less interested in long stretches of observation, unclear disguise reactions and polishing a mission I have already got through. Those are the things that decide whether I keep playing.

I understand why Silent Assassin mattered in 2002. I understand why people still care about it. Seven games in my collection have also taught me that I can keep giving a series another chance without ever making it one of my favourites.

Historical reference: Computer for Alle, Denmark, 2002, “Den danske lejemorder”: listed price 349 DKK and estimated campaign length of 10–15 hours for an experienced player.

Further reading: Greg Kasavin’s GameSpot review, 8 October 2002; Jeremy Kauffman’s GamesFirst PS2 review, 28 November 2002; Metacritic’s platform scores; Phil Savage’s PC Gamer retrospective, 19 April 2021.

Game and soundtrack sources: IO Interactive’s Silent Assassin page; IO Interactive’s Absolution page; Jesper Kyd’s official soundtrack; original PC manual, archived copy.
