Unboxing the Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f\/5.6E ED VR: My Long-Awaited Telephoto Beast<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

August 2025<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After months of wanting this lens, I can finally say it\u2019s here: the Nikon AF-S 200-500mm f\/5.6E ED VR.
But oh boy, the road to get here wasn\u2019t exactly smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The First Attempt: Amazon.de and the Month of Delays<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Originally, I found a good-condition used one on Amazon.de for \u20ac1,054.58. Great deal, right? Well\u2026 not so much.
Amazon kept pushing the delivery date back. Delay after delay for an entire month until I finally said f**k it<\/em> and canceled.
It wasn\u2019t all bad. Something else came up that I needed the money for anyway, so the timing worked out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Round Two: Going New on a Payment Plan<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A month later, I decided to go for it again, but this time new, with a payment plan spread over two years.
Final price: \u20ac1,526.80.
Yes, it was about \u20ac500 more than the used one, but the difference? I had it in my hands three days later<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Store Experience: Awkward as Always<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

I picked it up from Foto\/C in Copenhagen, a store I\u2019ve visited before and, honestly, never liked.
This time didn\u2019t change my opinion.
The guy who handed me the lens tried to upsell me a UV filter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“You don\u2019t use a filter? You really should.”<\/em>
I told him I don\u2019t. I use the hood instead. A filter with loose glass can trap dust behind it and affect image quality.
Then he told me I must have a \u201ccheap\u201d filter<\/em>.
When I said I bought it from their store, he quickly backpedaled with a “we don\u2019t talk about that”<\/em> kind of vibe.
Awkward. Very awkward.
Honestly, the only reason I ordered through them was so I could pick it up the same day instead of waiting for shipping.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n

Technical note: the hood and the filter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nikon lists both the hood and an NC filter as ways to protect the front element. A protective filter is optional. The lens takes 95mm screw-on filters, which is useful to know before buying an accessory for it. Nikon\u2019s lens manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

The Unboxing<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Back home, I wasted zero time getting this lens out of the box. Here\u2019s how it went:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. The Bag<\/strong>: The store packed the gold Nikon box inside a basic yellow plastic bag. Functional, nothing fancy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n

    2. The Lens<\/strong>: Heavy, solid, and ready for action. Zoom and focus rings feel smooth, and all the switches (VR modes, focus limiters) click firmly.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
    3. The Hood & Pouch<\/strong>: Nikon\u2019s round HB-71 hood clicks on tight. The pouch? Soft, basic, but it\u2019ll keep the dust off when stored.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

      1. Mounted on the D7500<\/strong>: Once the hood was on and it was mounted to my camera body, the whole setup looked like a proper wildlife rig.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
      2. Straight Out for Testing<\/strong>: No sitting around admiring it, I grabbed my bag and went out immediately to see what it could do.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

        First Impressions<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

        This lens feels like it means business. Solid build, smooth operation, and a reach that already feels like a game-changer compared to my old setup.
        The VR modes are easy to access, and I\u2019m especially curious to try \u201cSport\u201d mode for birds in flight.
        And yes, it\u2019s big, but surprisingly manageable for handheld shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The reach on the D7500:<\/strong> In its normal DX image area, the lens gives a field of view like a 300-750mm lens on full frame. Its actual focal length remains 200-500mm. The smaller sensor records a narrower view; it does not change the focal length printed on the lens. Nikon\u2019s product information<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        \n

        VR and the focus limiter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Normal VR<\/strong> is intended for stationary subjects. Sport VR<\/strong> is designed for rapid, unpredictable movement and panning. Nikon\u2019s quoted 4.5-stop<\/strong> stabilization figure is measured in Normal mode under CIPA conditions. VR reduces camera shake, so freezing a moving bird still calls for a suitable shutter speed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

        The \u221e-6m focus limiter<\/strong> can speed focusing when the subject stays at least six metres away. Use FULL<\/strong> for the whole focusing range, including closer animals. Nikon\u2019s lens manual<\/a>; Nikon\u2019s VR specification<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

        \n

        Handling a lens this size<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

        Nikon advises supporting the lens when holding the camera and mounting a tripod to the lens collar<\/strong>. The hood is not a carrying handle. The LOCK 200<\/strong> switch secures the zoom at 200mm during transport, and the hood can be reversed for storage. Nikon\u2019s handling instructions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n

        Next up? I\u2019ll be putting it through its paces with some wildlife sessions to see if it lives up to the hype.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
